Another piece of the puzzle is that +Sheen - like MANY priests at the time (even my saintly confessor) - saw Vatican II as "of the Holy Spirit" and submitted to it in obedience. They explained the fallout after the 2nd Vatican Council as a "high jacking" of the "reform" by radical progressives. Hindsight has revealed that the impetus of the council itself was flawed: that the Church needed to change to speak to "the modern world."

French Church Vandalised, Nothing Stolen: On 5 July, Saint-Étienne Church in Mulhouse, eastern France, was vandalised. A man entered the church, went straight to the sanctuary, removed the cross from the altar and threw it to the floor. He then knocked over a vase and used the cross to force open the doors of three confessionals, some dating back to the early 19th century. Nothing was stolen; the damage was confined to religious furnishings and symbols.
