On October 23, gunmen attacked a Greek Orthodox church in Hammoud, near Karak, Jordan, opening fire on Christians attending a funeral. Initial reports indicate seven people were killed and 34 injured, some seriously. Jordanian authorities described the shooting as a terrorist attack. Leo XIV cancels his presence at next inter-religious Assisi meeting. Pope Leo XIV will not travel to Assisi on October 27 for the peace meeting with representatives of various religions. The meeting was intended to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the syncretistic Assisi gathering convened by John Paul II in 1986. It seems that Leo XIV wants to avoid another scandal.
