The damage is done. The church of Sant'Ignazio in Carpi, which displayed homosexualised images such as an apparent oral homosexual fornication on the dead body of Christ, closed early on 17 April.
The exhibition was derisively called "Gratia plena" by the diocese. The paintings were originally scheduled to remain on display until 2 June. Catholics have been organising protests and rosary vigils for weeks.
On 28 March, an anonymous man allegedly damaged one of the paintings with spray paint and a knife and injured the painter in an alleged scuffle. The painter claimed to have been "stabbed" but only had a scratch on his chin. There is no picture of the damage to the painting or the alleged wounds on the painter. The 2-metre phantom assailant vanished into thin air and has not been identified.
