Report: Washington Cardinal Discourages Kneelers for Communion

Cardinal Robert McElroy of Washington D.C. is reportedly banning Communion kneelers and altar rails.

According to Christine Niles (June 14), Cardinal McElroy gave a directive during a recent meeting with priests: “no installation or reinstallation of altar rails”.

The directive also stated that the use of temporary kneelers is discouraged.

The excuse given was an alleged “disruption of the flow of the communion line". Furthermore, Cardinal McElroy believes that kneelers would turn the exception of kneeling into the norm, which in the U.S. is standing.

There was some relief in the fact that McElroy was safely far from the spotlight in San Diego. When he was made the Cardinal Archbishop of Washington, it was something like a gut punch.
