Leo XIV Appoints Archbishop, Enemy of the Latin Mass, as Secretary of Congregation for Clergy
Carlo Roberto Maria Redaelli (born 1956 in Milan) is a canon lawyer who served for many years in the Archdiocese of Milan before becoming Archbishop of Gorizia in 2012. He holds a doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Gregorian University, where he specialized in the nature of Church law in the postâVatican II period.
Promoting Homosexuality
In June 2017, in Staranzano, a small town in the Diocese of Gorizia, a leader of the Catholic Scout movement (AGESCI) entered into a homosexual civil union.
The parish priest, Don Francesco Fragiacomo, stated that, as a consequence of this choice, he could no longer retain his role as a Catholic educator.
Archbishop Redaelli intervened publicly and stabbed the priest in the back.
The anti-Catholic slogans of Monsignor Redaelli were: One must seek the âgrace present in every situationâ and not expect âclear, abstract, immutable principlesâ to solve every concrete case. Scripture and Canon Law do not always offer âready-made answers.â The Church must listen first to lived experience, under the guidance of "the Spirit". In complex personal situations, Christians should seek not âideal perfectionâ but âthe best possible good here and now.â Pastoral accompaniment should avoid âeasy judgments.â
Monsignor Redaelli cited Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini and Pope Francisâ Amoris Laetitia.
"Summorum Pontificum Is Invalid"
MessaInLatino.it reported in November 2018 that, during a meeting of the Italian bishops, Monsignor Redaelli spoke against the Mass in the Roman Rite.
He asserted that the Missal of 1962 had been repealed by Paul VI and that, therefore, the Papal decree Summorum Pontificum rested on erroneous legal premises.
For him, the Roman Rite liturgy has not been legitimately re-established and cannot be considered liberalized.
Italian reports interpreted Monsignor Redaelliâs remarks as an attack on Benedict XVI, who was still living as Pope Emeritus.
Immigration Champion
As President of Caritas Italiana, he became one of the most prominent episcopal voices promoting illegal immigration.
He emphasised the protection of immigrants' rights, expanded access to legal status and criticised restrictive asylum policies. He also called for broader reception systems.
