LOURDES, France (CNS) -- About 60 retired or active duty U.S. military personnel packed their uniforms, flags, wheelchairs, canes and the inevitable emotional baggage of their daily struggles to take part in a pilgrimage to Lourdes.
While many of these men and women, who had been injured in some way in the line of duty, went to seek peace and healing from this sacred place, some said they also found enormous and unexpected blessings from the people they encountered on their journey.
The soldiers, together with family members or caregivers, took part in a "Warriors to Lourdes" pilgrimage, sponsored by the U.S. Archdiocese for the Military Services and the Knights of Columbus. The Knights covered the costs for the wounded personnel for the weeklong encounter of prayer, healing and friendship. For many of them, the May 13-19 visit to Lourdes -- where Mary appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 -- was their first pilgrimage ever.

Going to the Chapel of Love
In an extraordinary letter addressed to His Holiness, the unnamed women say they are just a 'small sample' of believers being forced to 'live in silence' because of their relationship.
The letter starts: 'Dear Pope Francis, we are a group of women from all over Italy (and further afield) and are writing to you to break down the wall of silence and indifference that we are faced with every day.
'Each of us is in, was or would like to start a relationship with a priest we are in love with.' The 26 women signed with just their name and the initial letter of their surname, plus the name of their hometown, but they did write their surnames and telephone numbers on the envelope
About 6,000 Italian men have left the priesthood to marry, compared with a total of 33,000 parish priests now in service. The Pope has previously supported the tradition of celibacy, but has suggested his position might waiver.
'For now, I am in favour of maintaining celibacy, with all the …More

A prominent Catholic writer priest has challenged his church "to love gays and lesbians more deeply."
The Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit editor at America, a Catholic magazine, underlines the problem with the "love the sinner, hate the sin" formula he says many Christians use to guide their beliefs around homosexuality.
His piece entitled, Simply loving, comes at a time that the Vatican is said to be considering relaxing its stance on same-sex civil partnerships and when Pope Francis has urged more tolerance toward gay people.

Two comments:
1. Hating the sin and loving the sinner is the maxim. Although we are all sinners, what if the sinner identifies himself with the sin? It is one thing to steal, another to be a thief, stealing habitually. Likewise it is one thing to commit adultery, another to do it habitually, becoming an adulterer.
2. Although there are various interpretations of Zachaeus' meeting with Christ, the Martin interpretation seems not to be consistent with text.
a. When Zachaeus tells Christ about giving to the poor and not defrauding anyone, the tenses do not indicate that it is a promise of future behavior. Rather, it is a comment directed at the opinion of Jews, that he is already acting ethically in his work. This is not a story of ethical conversion.
b. And so the story indicates that ethical behavior, while good, is not sufficient—he is not able to see Christ without climbing a sycamore tree . It is not the same as the presence of Christ, or, more specifically, the Divine Indwelling of …More

I stopped into a church today intending to pray the whole Rosary (all 15 decades) sitting before Our Lord reposed in a tabernacle. I got through the Joyful Mysteries when a crazy man/professional panhandler entered the church begging for handouts. He zeroed in on me and wouldn’t relent. I tried to ignore him. Then… he touched me.
Now I’m engaged. It’s on. He curses me, turns and faces Our Lord in the tabernacle, curses Him, and then spits at Our Lord in the tabernacle. Now, this is where it gets… interesting. Crazy panhandler dude then wheels back on me and says, “Why don’t you go back? Why don’t you go back where you came from?” Over and over again. Now, I guess there is a certain general quality to that statement, but I found it interesting considering that the creature that was saying this had just cursed and then spit upon Our Blessed Lord reposed in the tabernacle. Hmmmm. Maybe someone doesn’t like like me being here in Riverville. Edifying!

(Reuters) - When Pope Francis meets the spiritual head of the world's Orthodox Christians next week, the speeches and symbolism will focus on how these ancient western and eastern wings of Christianity want to come closer together.
After almost a millennium apart, however, the key to the elusive unity they seek does not lie in Jerusalem, where the Catholic pope and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew will embrace on May 25. If anywhere, that key lies in Moscow.
The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), by far the largest church in the Orthodox world and increasingly influential at home and abroad, has long been wary of the closer ties Francis and Bartholomew want to work towards.
Its opposition has only stiffened in recent months amid the crisis in Ukraine, where the political standoff between …More

When he was belatedly drafted into the NFL, openly gay player Michael Sam celebrated on TV by kissing his male lover. Oddly, the pair also smooshed cake in each other’s faces as if they were a couple getting married. One Texas talk show host objected to the display on TV, but when she spoke up she began to receive death threats and even threats of rape.

Amy Kushnir said airing the kiss was “inappropriate” and “over-the-top,” scolding ESPN for showing the “shocking video” in the first place. Kushnir did not say anything negative about gay people, she simply expressed her outraged that ESPN would use the opportunity “to promote their left-wing agenda.”

The claims that his trip will begin in a "recognition of Palestine" comes amid reports from February by Rabbi Sergio Bergman, a member of the Argentinian parliament and close friend of Pope Francis, who said that the pope intends to define himself as the "Che Guevera of the Palestinians" and support their "struggle and rights" during his visit.
In Bethlehem the pope is to travel in an open-top car and meet with PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, holding "mass" prayer services there instead of in Jerusalem in what has been called a show of support for the PA.
It has been noted that the pope has been remarkably tight-lipped over the violent persecution of Christians in Bethlehem, instead choosing to condemn alleged Jewish "price tag" vandalism.

Pope Francis leaves next Saturday for a brief but intense three-day outing to Jordan, the Palestinian Territories, and Israel, a region Christians traditionally call the “Holy Land.” He’ll become the fourth pope to make the trip, which is always a religious and political high-wire act.
Four challenges await him, beginning with the situation facing the region’s small Christian minority.
Across the Middle East, Christians have declined from 20 percent of the population in the early 20th century to roughly 4 percent, and that decline is palpable in the Holy Land. The city of Bethlehem in the Palestinian Territories, where Francis will say an open-air Mass on Sunday, was almost entirely Christian a century ago, but today it’s more than two-thirds Muslim.
The Catholic patriarch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal, warns that the Holy Land, if the trend continues, could become a “spiritual …More

An Italian bishop's comment that appeared to denigrate pro-life advocates who pray at abortion clinics drew criticism from a pro-life leader in the U.K., who said their witness helps save lives.
Bishop Nunzio Galantino of Cassano all'Jonio, who is also secretary-general of the Italian bishops' conference, told the Florentine newspaper La Nazione May 12 that “I don’t identify with the expressionless person who stands outside the abortion clinic reciting their rosary, but with young people, who are still against this practice, but are instead fighting for quality of life, their health, their right to work.”
The remark drew a response from John Smeaton, director of the U.K.-based Society for the Protection of Unborn Children.

Galantino was selected not because he's going places but because he's not--Southern Italian bishops are of little consequence. The pope wants to break the Italian episcopal career path and its influence in the curia, which BTW kept Benedict from implementing anything.

A pregnant woman who was raised as a Christian has been sentenced to execution by a Sudanese court that contends she has apostatized from Islam, drawing worldwide condemnation.
“Mrs. Ibrahim’s willingness to stand-up for her faith – even in the face of death – is a true mark of uncommon courage and bravery,” Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) said May 15.
Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, 27, is recognized as Muslim under Sudanese law because her father was Muslim. Her father abandoned the family when Ibrahim was six years old and she was raised as a Christian by her Ethiopian Orthodox mother.
Ibrahim married Daniel Wani, a Christian from South Sudan, and is now eight months pregnant.
She was arrested in August 2013; a Khartoum court convicted Ibrahim May 15 of apostasy from Islam, and adultery, on the grounds that marriage between Muslim women and non-Muslim men is not recognized.

Jerrell Harris, 21, was arrested Thursday after being identified as the person who broke into the rectory of St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church on Dec. 6, 2011, where 80-year-old Fr. Dan Mallette lived, police said.

The two robbers demanded money and started beating the 80-year-old priest, Antonietti said. One of them grabbed Mallette's walking cane and a tool used to sprinkle holy water (Aspergillum-ED), striking the priest in the head, she said.

The Vatican Secretariat of State sent a letter on April 3rd from the Holy Father to Kiko Argüello, initiator of the Neocatechumenal Way, along with Carmen Hernandez, confirming the liturgical praxis of the Way with regards to the Eucharist and the Paschal Vigil.

The Catholic faith is rich with symbolic clothing: the priest’s Roman collar, the nun’s habit, the Pope’s white cassock and cap. They invest the church with a sense of timelessness and gravity.
But even in a 2,000-year old sacramental religion, clothing changes—and in the United States, Catholic dress has had its own distinct story. The Roman collar, ubiquitous now, wasn’t mandatory for American priests until 1884. Nuns’ hemlines have crept upward, and headpieces receded in size. Even Catholic school uniforms have changed.
