Episcopal Spine Alerts are busting out all over

I must say, I have a sort of back-handed gratitude to our God King. His direct, aggressive and brazen assault on religious liberty in general and on the Catholic Church in particular has caused a huge number of American bishops to stiffen their spines and say “Not just no, but HELL NO!” to this naked act of leftist tyranny.

And not just them, Catholics on the left and the right are locking arms on this. A hopeful sign.

Some people are wondering what cunning plan the Administration is unfolding here. I think it’s better explained by stupidity and arrogance than cunning. I don’t think they expected a firestorm, and I particularly don’t think they expected it from Catholic Democrats. These people think of themselves as our natural masters, civilizers of savages who don’t understand that all truly cultured people accept abortion as the Way of Things. And like people used to ignoring Flyover Country, they simply forgot that all the little people were down there–a classic case of epistemic closure.

My hope is that their attempt make this draconian law go quiet by not imposing it till after the election will backfire and it will metastasize and blow up in their face before the election. Already, they’ve got Marco Rubio fighting them with a religious liberty bill. If they don’t back off, it’s liable to wind up in SCOTUS, where I have good hope that they will receive the same pounding they got when they tried to insert themselves into who can and cannot be ordained.

So I’m hopeful that this is going to turn out to be a bridge too far for Obama and he will get the smackdown he so richly deserves. Keep praying!

That said, adherents of the Thing that Used to be Liberalism need to face up to the fact that their ideology has radically failed when it has curdled into this kind of tyranny.
